Four regional competitions and one state competition later, we’ve had a fun and busy year. Twelve teams and advisors and many volunteers from across the state came together on May 24-25 in Longbranch for the 2023 Washington State Envirothon competition. Hosted by Pierce Conservation District with the support of other conservation districts throughout the state, the 2023 Washington State Envirothon was held at Soundview Camp in the Key Peninsula.

Envirothon is a unique opportunity for high school students to gain problem-solving, public speaking, critical thinking, and leadership skills all while learning more about conservation and environmental topics and careers. At the State competition, teams transitioned through four different testing stations – aquatics, forestry, soils, land use, and wildlife. At these test stations, teams worked together to complete challenges such as identifying animal hides, measuring the width of trees, calculating a stream quality assessment, and measuring the texture of a soil sample.
Ahead of the competition, teams prepared a presentation responding to a real-life scenario based on the 2023 current issue, Adapting to a Changing Climate. Teams were asked to present recommendations on how a community can mitigate the impacts of climate change. During the competition, teams delivered their presentation and proposed solutions in front of a panel of judges in the natural resource field.

Walla Walla High School placed first and will represent Washington State at the 2023 National Envirothon competition held in New Brunswick on July 23-29, 2023. Congratulations to all the teams who participated in Regional and State competitions this year.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers, conservation district board and staff, and the Washington State Conservation Commission, Washington Conservation Society, and Washington Association of Conservation Districts for making Washington State Envirothon possible.
